#202 How to Find Internship Opportunities

5/01/2024 by Pepper Russell, IOM

Internships are great opportunities for students and young professionals to gain hands-on experience, expand existing skill sets, and jumpstart a career path.

Internships can be used to explore a particular industry, build your resume, or to increase your personal network of industry professionals once you’ve learned to navigate the internship search process effectively. Here are a few tips for finding internship opportunities.

  • Start early and research thoroughly: The key to finding the right internship for you is to start at the earliest opportunity and to research your chosen industry thoroughly.
  •  Identify those industries, companies, or organizations that align with your interests, career goals, and skill sets. Love animals? Look at your community shelter for openings. Have a knack for numbers? Check out local CPA offices and business associations.
  •  Explore online resources such as job boards, company websites, and professional networking platforms to explore internship opportunities in your desired field. Many companies post internship openings directly on their websites under a "Careers" or "Jobs" section.
  •  Investigate local industry-specific organizations and associations relevant to your field of choice. Attend their events and ask if you can volunteer at one. If possible, join the organization to show your interest and commitment to the industry.
  • Network with professionals in your area including alumni, mentors, and professors to ask about internship openings, and don’t forget about family and family friends. Ask for advice on navigating the job market when you attend industry events, career fairs, and networking mixers to expand your network and make meaningful connections with potential employers.
  • Use career services: Career services advisors can provide personalized guidance, internship leads, and interview preparation assistance to help you succeed in your internship search.

Finding the best internship opportunity for your needs requires strategic planning, proactive effort, and a positive attitude. By starting early, focusing on your chosen industry, researching through all available avenues, and networking with everyone you meet, you will maximize your chances of securing a valuable internship experience and set yourself up for success on your career path.
