Finding Your New Job: Step-by-Step

Looking for an internship position or a new job? Here’s what you need to do, step-by-step.

Self-Assessment and Preparation

First things first, think about what you want in your career. What are your goals and interests? What kind of job are you looking for? Once you have that figured out, it's time to take a good look at your skills. What are your strengths? Where could you improve?

Next up, update your resume and cover letter. You'll want a polished resume ready to go, and a basic cover letter that you can tweak for each job application.

Job Search

Now that you're prepared, it's time to dive into the job search. Start by researching companies and industries that match your goals. Use online job boards. Don’t forget to check out company career pages too.

Networking is key! Reach out to your professional contacts, attend industry events, and join relevant professional associations. Social media platforms like LinkedIn can also be really helpful to connect with potential employers and discover job openings. Additionally, make use of your college or university's career services office – they often have great resources.

Application Process

When you're ready to apply, make sure to tailor your resume and cover letter for each job to highlight the skills and experiences that are most relevant. Submit your applications through online portals, company websites, or via email as specified in the job postings.

Write down and keep track of all the jobs you've applied for. Note the dates you applied, the interviews you had, and any follow-up actions you need to take.

Prepare for Interviews

Once you land an interview, it’s time to prepare. Research the company thoroughly. Understand their mission, values, culture, and recent achievements. Practice common interview questions and even do some mock interviews.

Don’t forget to plan your attire. Choose something professional that fits the industry and company culture. If your work requires you to clean out animal pens, don’t show up to your interview in a 3-piece suit. Instead choose a clean pair of well-fitting jeans with no holes and a simple polo shirt with a collar. Pair with a clean pair of sneakers and you’re done!

Interviews

On the day of the interview, make sure to confirm the details: date, time, location, and the names of your interviewers. Arrive at least 10 minutes early to make a good impression. During the interview, engage with enthusiasm, listen carefully, and ask thoughtful questions about the how the role you perform will help the company.

After the interview, send a thank-you email to express your appreciation and confirm your interest in the position. Think about repeating something that you liked that was discussed in the interview process – this shows you were paying attention!

Evaluate Offers

If you receive a job offer, review the details carefully. If you’re lucky enough to have multiple offers, compare them based on benefits, salary, company culture, career growth opportunities, and job responsibilities. Don’t hesitate to negotiate terms like salary, benefits, or start date if necessary.

Accepting a Position

Once you’ve made your decision, formally accept the job offer. Sign any necessary documents and send a written acceptance email or letter. If you have other pending applications or offers, notify those employers that you have accepted another position so they can move on to the next candidate.

Prepare for the New Job

Finally, get ready for your new role. Complete any pre-employment requirements like submitting documents, background checks, or pre-employment tests. Confirm your start date and make any necessary arrangements, such as relocating or securing transportation. Then, attend orientation sessions and start integrating into your new role and company culture.

These tips will help you choose the right position and show your skills off to your best advantage. Enjoy the journey!
